On the evening of Friday 20th March 2020 I sent the following email to all my clients who have booked me for an upcoming event -- no matter how far ahead into the future. I’ve decided to pop it on my website for full transparency, and it may be useful for people who are considering booking me for an event during this uncertain period.
Firstly please forgive the impersonal nature of this email; although I’ve been in contact with many of my clients over the last week, there are also many I haven’t spoken to so wanted to send a blanket email to everyone I have in my diary regarding the current Coronavirus outbreak.
Some of you may have booked me recently; some have booked me over two years ahead of their big day. Some of you have stumbled across my website on the internet, and others have booked me multiple times before. However, my primary goal at the moment is to make sure that the guests at weddings and parties are entertained with some great magic and have fun – which is exactly the way it has been for the last fourteen years.
I’ve been keeping up to date with the news and the immediate concerns are the forced closure of public venues to restrict the flow of the Covid-19 virus. I believe the important factor to note is these are public gatherings, whereas the events I am often booked for are private functions held within controlled environments. Therefore, unless more stringent measures are brought in I believe that private functions (such as weddings and parties) should be able to continue; though guests who are in ‘high risk’ categories or who have shown symptoms should be asked to stay away.
I am fully aware of the risks and seriousness of the Covid-19 virus. From a personal point of view my father is a very high risk due to pre-existing conditions, and he is a full-time carer for my mother who suffered a brain injury two years ago. I say that not to garner sympathy, but to illustrate I wouldn’t attend a function if I thought I could potential put my family, or the family of others, at risk.
As far as I am concerned I’ll be honouring all the contracts I have with my clients, and should dates need to change because of temporary venue closures or government restrictions then I’m not going to be a stickler over the small-print and will of course apply common sense, and I ask you to do the same.
To those who have booked me for events not in the immediate coming months need not worry. The situation has changed so much over the last week that trying to project what will happen any more than a few months down the line is pointless. Should you wish to discuss options please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me, even if it’s just so I can assure you I won’t be doing a runner with your deposit! 😉
Many of you have also expressed concern and wished me luck in getting through the coming months. I managed to weather the financial crisis ten years ago, and I’m hopeful I’ll still be performing magic professionally for years to come. (After this long I don’t know what else I could do!) I must admit that it has been a quiet winter and I was looking forward to performing at the spring full of weddings and parties I had expected, so there’s no denying I will be facing some tough times ahead.
I wish you well, and I am still expecting to see you and all your guests – though in some cases it won’t be as soon as we had first thought. Please keep yourselves and your family safe; and make sure you take all the precautions to limit the spread of this terrible disease, and hopefully life can return to some sort of normality as soon as possible.
Finally, I realise for the past ten days the news, media, social media and everything just seems to be filled with doom and gloom. And although I’ve tried to at least hint at “everything will be ok” in this email, the reason for its underlying message is still a disturbing one.
