On Saturday I went to the town of Bletchley, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire for a 90th birthday celebration.
Liven up a party!
I had been contacted by Chrissie, the daughter of Iris, who was arranging the party. She was worried that sometimes family events can be a little “stale” with guests sitting around tables making the usual small-talk, and wanted something interactive to liven things up a bit. Hence her call to me!
I explained to Chrissie that I mingle with guests, going up to tables and groups and spending 5 to 10 minutes at a table entertaining them, then return back to them again later. This way people can chat, see some magic (which creates a talking point), chat some more, then see some more magic. Of course I do different tricks for different people so as the guests mingle they have more to talk about too.
Chrissie advised me that she was going to be doing a short speech after the food. In this speech she was going to be reading a poem she had written – and that I even featured in a couple of lines of it myself! Fortunately I had my PA system in the boot of my car so I brought that in with me to ensure all the guests to hear her.
As I had that in I also suggested to Chrissie I could do a short after-dinner cabaret too which went down well too; and left a few people completely baffled!
Thanks for the magic
The next day Chrissie sent me an email to thank me:
Hiya Robert,
Just wanted to say a big thank you for Saturday afternoon at mums 90th. You went down a storm, most impressive, and thanks for taking my lines about you in the poem in good nature.
I hope you get lots of business in the future, you deserve it so much.
Thanks once again,
Chrissie
Spooky things in Bletchley
I remembered that this was the first time I have been to Bletchley. A few years ago I attended a workshop there about adding spookiness to magical performances – including doing Ouija Boards and “communicating with the other side”…
