Professional entertainment for your wedding
For immediate release – Friday 22nd March 2023
Sunday 24th March will mark the 150th birthday of arguable the world’s greatest magician and escapologist, Harry Houdini. Born Erich Weisz in Hungary, he emigrated to the United States; training as a sleight-of-hand magician in his youth and touring with travelling fairs. But he came to worldwide fame after changing his name and performing solely escapology in his shows.
“I can be performing a card trick at a wedding and someone will still mention Houdini.” says professional Berkshire-based magician, Robert Bone. “For someone born 150 years ago, it is amazing that the average person will name Houdini if asked to think of a famous magician.”
Weisz was of course highly skilled as an escapologist who could pick any lock and escape shackles, handcuffs and straitjackets; often whilst suspended upside-down from a crane, or submerged in icy water. But he was also a master of sleight of hand magic, taking his now famous stage-name as a nod towards the French magician Robert Houdin.
“In my opinion Houdini’s biggest skill wasn’t his technical ability, but his showmanship,” continues Robert, “by being not only able to entertain a theatre packed full of spectators; but doing it in a way that children still name their hamsters after him over a hundred years later!”
Robert Bone has been a professional magician and mindreader since 2006, and currently lives in Berkshire; and is happy to talk more about Houdini’s 150th birthday, and anything else magic related.
