Cotswolds Wedding Magician 4

I was recently reminded of Lucy and Jack’s wonderful wedding after Gloucestershire wedding photographer Judith Parkyn forwarded over some great photos from the day – and in particular a fantastic set of me performing for Lucy and Jack before they were called in for the wedding breakfast.

Elmore Court Wedding Magician

The wedding was at Elmore Court, on the edge of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. It’s a stunning wedding venue in a rural location, and it’ always a pleasure to perform there.

Lucy and Jack booked me after seeing me at a relative’s wedding the previous spring, and asked me to entertain their guests during the afternoon wedding reception. Immediately after the ceremony Judith gathered the everyone together for the main groups photographs; but as the afternoon continued the Judith took the bride and groom off to the quieter and secluded parts of Elmore Court for more photographs, whilst I mingled with guests showing sleight-of-hand magic and close-up mindreading.

Although it was a lovely sunny day with blue skies in the Cotswolds (which no doubt was a relief to Judith for taking the photos!) it was still in March, so there was still a slight chill in the air. Therefore this meant that over the course of the afternoon reception guests were mingling outside on the lawned garden, as well as inside where it was a little warmer! From my point of view a strolling magician it’s great because I can adjust to the changing dynamics.

And of course over the time of the wedding reception the guests are getting to know me a lot better – towards the end of the wedding reception there was a point where I started showing something to a small group, but as others in the room wanted to see more magic a crowd soon started to develop. In the end I was completely surrounded and was pretty much doing an impromptu cabaret show!

I try to remember the name of the guests as I mingle, as well as remembering what they’ve already seen and what particular style (and even what specific tricks) will resonate best; not only entertaining them, but making the most memorable impact – all which not only makes for a talking point, but also helps create those memories that people will (and do!) look back on for years to come.

From a magician’s point of view it’s great to work with a photographer such as Judith that likes working with magicians! Over the years I’ve worked with a few who don’t seem to appreciate that a good magician can change the dynamics of a wedding reception, and of course generate the reactions that make for interesting photographs.

With Lucy and Jack missing most of this – but hearing all about it from their guests – it was good to have a couple of minutes with them alone once the guests had been called through to the wedding breakfast. There’s always a bit of time for the wedding guests to find their seats and settle down before the bride and groom are formally announced, so this is always a good opportunity to do something special for them.
